Sustainable Energy Park

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PARK

Concept Document

A farm setting integrating design, technology and nature, able to independently produce and sustain its own life-giving energy. We will seek to exploit hydrogen’s tremendous potential as a clean energy, emissions-free fuel to round out a full complement of renewable energy sources, including solar, pumped hydro, solar thermal, wind and, as applicable, geothermal. Only market-ready, emissions-free energy technology uniquely suited to sustain life on a pacific Island will be scaled and installed here to meet the needs of North Kohala, Greater Waimea, the Hamakua Coast, and beyond.

Planning for the park will be community-based and will apply land use patterns that incorporate the existing ancient and historic cultural landscape as the park foundation. Like how the Kohala “field system” is being restored and replanted, archaeological features, including trails, habitation, agricultural and ceremonial features will be preserved and as culturally appropriate, restored and made functional. It is our intent to demonstrate modern technology existing side by side with, rather than overshadowing, historical culture and endemic flora. The people of Kohala are integral to the co-creation of a sense of place that honors the ahupua’a and its accompanying values of ohana (family), lokahi (unity) and aina momona (abundance).

The park will serve as a platform for community-based integrated multi-cultural and economic development set on goals formed by Kohala people in drafting the existing Community Development Plan. We will engage our youth and their immediate and extended families in the process with the intention of providing a space for the expression of their passion and creativity in the development of careers and vocations for all family members in the fields of the arts, culture, science, engineering, resource management, leadership development, the humanities and fields yet to be discovered and defined by participants in our process.
